Heart of Europe, Carinthian Open

Herbert Nitsch, the Diving Machine – Three records in three days

Extrem.hu was present at the Carinthian Open for two reasons: to see a freediving competition on location and to experience Herbert Nitsch‘s world record attempts. Herbert made three!!! world records and the competition was great, too. Our coverage of the action-packed weekend starts with the account of Herbert‘s records, around which there was so much secrecy that it would make a perfect plot for a detective movie.

Carinthian Open – The Eventful Static

They look like dead black fish, floating face down in a swimming pool. They, however, are alive- they are participating freedivers in a Static competition. On the scene report about long minutes of silence, where even the spectators hold their breath, about black outs, when the doctor needed. On the whole, about an eventful Static.

Going deep, with a blackout – The Constant Weight event

Should I try to push my limits or stay on the safe side? Should I risk a blackout or an ear injury? If I do just want I can surely do, how do I improve? Difficult question that freedivers have to face. In the third part of our coverage of the Heart of Europe Feediving Open, you can read about that among many other things.

World Record Holders:

Our interview with Martin Stepanek – ‘My dream is to dive over 100 meter selfpowered – just me and the ocean‘

Martin Stepanek can hold his breath longer than anybody else in the world. His world record is 8 minutes 6 seconds. An eternity – if you are not allowed to take a breath during that time. We have managed to reach this extraordinary Czech guy.

Our interview with Peter Pedersen – ‘A dreamlimit is what you consider one‘

Yesterday we were among the first in the world to report about the three new world records in freediving. While the world elite was picking up their dropped jaws, we managed to reach one of the new record holders. Here is our exclusive interview with Peter Pedersen, who can swim 200 meters in a pool with one breath of air. Plus: you can also find a video about the records.

(August 18, 2003.)

Our interview with Stig Severinsen – “Freediving is natural for me”

As we reported, on July 19th three world records were broken in Denmark. After Peter Pedersen, we also managed to reach Stig Severinsen as well. He plays underwater rugby, UW-hockey, he is working on his PhD, and he is spending his weekend swimming world records in freediving. He is extremely self-confident, but why should it be otherwise? He is a class on his own, that is for sure.

Girl Power Underwater – Deeper, Longer, Further

So far, we have concentrated on the male world recorders, but there are some female freedivers who know as much as the guys. Now, its the girls‘ turn. We try to find out what are the major differences between the two sexes. Not only for feminists!
